Also known as HBOT, our Dallas Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized room or through a tube. HBOT is an established form of treatment for numerous symptoms and issues including decompression sickness, infections, even bubbles of air in the blood vessels. It can also be used to treat wounds that won’t heal as well as carbon monoxide poisoning.
HBOT is the equivalent to taking about a nine or ten foot dive into the pool or going up into the air in an airplane. The pressure in the chamber is partnered with concentrated oxygen levels in the chamber. The oxygen level increases to apx 50/60% which is much higher than atmospheric oxygen which is approximately 20%. With the air pressure increased, our lungs are able to absorb this amount of concentrated oxygen. This is a great therapy for overall longevity, tissue healing, as well as concussion therapy.
In this state, your blood is able to carry oxygen throughout the body more efficiently so that it is able to heal itself more effectively. Your body’s tissues need an adequate supply of oxygen to function, and when your tissue is injured, it requires even more oxygen to survive. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy increases the amount of oxygen your blood can carry. An increase in blood oxygen temporarily restores normal levels of blood gases and tissue function to promote healing and fight infection.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a medical treatment which enhances the body’s natural healing process by inhalation of 97% oxygen in a total body chamber, where atmospheric pressure is increased and controlled. It is used for a wide variety of treatments usually as a part of an overall medical care plan.
Under normal circumstances, oxygen is transported throughout the body only by red blood cells. With HBOT, oxygen is dissolved into all of the body’s fluids, the plasma, the central nervous system fluids, the lymph, and the bone and can be carried to areas where circulation is diminished or blocked. In this way, extra oxygen can reach all of the damaged tissues and the body can support its own healing process. The increased oxygen greatly enhances the ability of white blood cells to kill bacteria, reduces swelling and allows new blood vessels to grow more rapidly into the affected areas. It is a simple, non-invasive and painless treatment.
A Hyperbaric chamber is used to administer Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), a non-invasive therapy in which the patient breathes a very concentrated amount of oxygen. The patient is enclosed in a transparent chamber with an increase in atmospheric pressure, enabling a concentrated delivery of oxygen to damaged tissue for optimized healing.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is the delivery of oxygen to the body, particularly damaged tissues, at greater than atmospheric pressure for increased healing. Traditionally, HBOT is a primary therapy in two issues: gas embolism and decompression sickness (The Bends). In all other cases, it is a supportive treatment given in addition to standard treatment protocols.
The patient will lie inside the chamber as the pressure in the chamber is increased and oxygen levels are increased. Being in this oxygen-rich environment, along with the increase in air pressure, speeds and multiplies the concentration of Oxygen molecules to damaged or impaired tissues, thereby promoting healing.
When the pressure begins to change, the patient may have a slight pressure in their ears similar to taking a dive into the swimming pool or taking off in an airplane. This can be relieved by swallowing or opening their mouth and popping the ears. The internal chamber temperature may warm slightly, but will return to normal as soon as treatment pressure is obtained. Once the tank has reached treatment pressure, you should feel nothing during the treatment. During decompression, the patient may again feel a slight pressure in the ears.
The Hyperbaric Chamber can be very relaxing. You can choose to take this time to decompress and relax without distractions. However, if you need a distraction to help with being in the chamber, you can take your phone or table with you and watch a show or listen to music. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable.
A very small amount of patients experience a slight change in their vision; this side effect usually goes away within eight weeks of completing treatment. It is recommended that patients do not get a new prescription for their eyewear while they are receiving HBOT.
Though we reccommend that you do not bring anything with you into the chamber other than a water bottle, you are also allowed to bring your phone or tablet with you into the chamber.
Our sessions last 60 min or 1 hour. Treatments continue for various amounts of time, depending on the client’s specific diagnosis. For example, treatments for chronic issues like autoimmune disorders, chronic fatigue, tinnitus, tissue healing, etc. could continue for up to 20-40 sessions. Other more minor or acute issues may need less treatment. We also have clients that use Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for general wellness, and they come in once or twice a month. Please consult with our physicians if you need more guidance for your issue.
